Have you ever called somebody – or been called – “Machiavellian”? If so, did you consider it an insult, or a compliment?
The most notorious of political scientists, widely considered a “teacher of evil,” Niccolo Machiavelli owes his reputation to a brief treatise called The Prince. In it he lays out an utterly realistic, thoroughly amoral, guide for the ruler who wants to maintain power; a program justified solely by the argument that it is the best way to serve one’s state. Even if horrified by some of his recommendations, readers are forced to admit that it is hard to find flaws in the practical efficiency of his logic.
Join us for talks, discussions, and dramatic presentations exploring the fascination that continues five centuries after Machiavelli’s death.
