Asian Classics
Why Asian Classics?
More than ever before, in today’s global society we are all connected to one another. Our economies, our politics, and our cultures are now so intertwined that decisions made on one continent reverberate across the seas. Nowhere is this more evident than in Asia. South Asia, the Middle East, and the Far East: these are the regions dominating the headlines today. But how well do we understand these cultures? The Asian Classics certificate program is a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary exploration of Eastern cultures and civilizations, designed to build a bridge
between West and East.
Why the University of Chicago?
In the University of Chicago tradition of reading and discussing primary sources, the Asian Classics program illuminates today’s Eastern societies by examining some of their foundational texts. Students spend a year delving into each region—the Middle East, India, China, and Japan—and read key works from ancient to modern times, including literature, history, religious texts, philosophy, and folklore. Classes are discussion-centered, with knowledgeable instructors providing a context in which these cultures become meaningful to Western and Eastern students alike.
Why the Graham School?
The Graham School provides convenient, affordable access to the University of Chicago. The Asian Classics program is ideal for anyone—whether a lifelong learner or an active professional—who wants to understand Asian cultures and societies better. Since it is a University of Chicago program, you can expect depth, rigor, and quality; and since it is a noncredit Graham School program, Asian Classics courses are affordable and accessible, with no tests, grades, or papers. Students who complete the four-year program earn a University of Chicago liberal arts certificate. Continuing professional development credit (CPDU) is available for teachers. For those who want to study one region exclusively, there are one-year certificates for each area: the Middle East, India, China, or Japan.
Designed around today’s busy lifestyles, the Asian Classics program is offered part-time, with classes in the evening or daytime at our convenient downtown location. Each 10-week course meets once per week for 3 hours. Tuition is $440 per course, or $410 if you register early.
Students may start the Asian Classics program in any year, and in any quarter. For new
students we suggest the following order: Middle East, India, China, Japan.
