The Middle East Year
Middle East Year classes and registration information on the Graham School website.
Most Americans see the Middle East as a stage for war and terror, fueled by religious difference and competing historic claims on the territory. The Asian Classics program delves beneath the headlines to explore the emergence of Islam. Students will discover pre-Islamic poetry; the rich content and imagery in the Qur’an, the starting point for all Muslims; the great Persian epic Shahnameh; important works of philosophy and jurisprudence; beautiful Sufi poetry; and the famous One Thousand and One Nights. Additional Persian and Turkish works, and other contributions from this complex and fascinating area round out the year.
