The Japan Year

The Japan Year

The Japan Year

Japan Year classes and registration information on the Graham School website.

Japan only opened to the West in the 19th century, and there is still much to understand about this unique island nation. In this year of the Asian Classics program, students will follow Buddhism as it unfolds in Japan and will also explore classic chronicles and histories of Japanese life. Japanese literature flowered during the Heian period and the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon as well as the extraordinary psychological novel, the Tale of Genji, both reveal a thousand-year-old world that is startlingly modern and familiar. Works by key writers such as Basho and Dogen will round out this year’s offerings.
